Phase C: Business Information Systems Architecture
TOGAF states the objectives of Phase C are:
- To develop a target architecture for the application architecture
- To develop a target architecture for the data architecture
Adapted Objectives
To create a business architecture the scope must include all business functions and processes.
a) To describe the target business capabilities.
b) To describe the target business information requirements.
c) If appropriate to define the baseline business capabilities.
d) Perform a gap analysis of the business capabilities.
e) To create a structure for the enterprise continuum and architecture repository.
f) To identify any tools or additional frameworks to be used in creating the business architecture.
With the scope limited to business processes supported by IT and it’s interfaces.
Business scenarios/flows can be used to validate the principles, and scope agreed in phase A: preliminary and phase B: architecture vision to create more detailed descriptions of the capabilities in the form of requirements.
An example of a capability described at this level could be:-

Phase D: Technology Architecture
For business architecture there is limited need for technology, the main area to be considered is the tools which may be required to assist in creating the business architecture. e.g. process modeling/requirements management or architecture modeling tools.
