Phase B: Business Architecture
TOGAF states the objectives of Phase B are:
- To describe the Baseline Business Architecture
- To develop a Target Business Architecture
- To analyze the gaps between the Baseline and Target Business Architectures
- To select the relevant architecture viewpoints that will enable the architect to demonstrate how the stakeholder concerns are addressed in the Business Architecture
- To select the relevant tools and techniques to be used in association with the selected viewpoints
In this case we are looking to create the business architecture during this cycle of the ADM. Therefore the approach needs to be adapted.
Adapted Objectives
TOTEM recommends that you use this phase of the ADM to focus on creating structures and gaining stakeholder agreement on:
- Business architecture governance (not to be confused with business governance*) outlining effective principles, measures, metrics and process to ensure the project to create a new business architecture is implemented.
- Detailed requirements of the new business architecture. It is likely that the initiator of the business architecture process was identification of issues/challenges with the current business architecture (or lack there of). Therefore these issues should be reflected appropriately as requirements or stakeholder concerns.
- High level business scenarios and expressing how the business principles are to be reflected in the scenarios.
- Communications plan ensuring stakeholders are appropriately engaged in the process of creating the business architecture and facilitating a smoother sign off process.
Next: Information Systems Architecture
*Business governance addresses guiding the operational business. A requirement for designing the business governance management function should be included in the scope of the business architecture.
